On September 17, 2026, Josh Hawley unveiled a “Declaration for Life” with a group of Christian leaders. The document calls on Congress to ban mifepristone, the drug used in medication abortion, which accounted for 63% of U.S. abortions in 2023, and urges lawmakers to sign on.
What Hawley wants
“It’s time to take a vote on my legislation to ban the chemical abortion drug mifepristone,” Hawley said. He framed the declaration as a call to “everyday Christians across America,” and he’s pushing Republican candidates to sign it.
Why it matters in Missouri
Missouri voters put abortion rights in the state constitution in 2024. A federal ban on mifepristone would override that for the most common method of abortion, no matter how Missourians vote on the 2026 Amendment 3. It’s the same senator who says he’s fighting for Missouri, asking Washington to overrule it.

The same week, Hawley told the Washington Examiner he has “no intention” of running for president in 2028. His term in the Senate runs until January 2031.
